Charlotte has the Catawba River just east of the city and 40-50 years ago Duke Power realized they could make a lot of money damming this river... and that's exactly what they did creating 5 beautiful lakes, 3 of which are right in the Charlotte area. The largest, Lake Norman, is about 25 miles from downtown Charlotte, neighboring towns include Cornelius, Huntersville, Mooresville, Davidson, and Denver. Lake Wylie to the south borders South Carolina, with neighboring towns of Tega Cay, Fort Mill, Clover and southern portions of the city of Charlotte. Mountain Island Lake is the smallest in the center top, just north of town. Power boating is popular on all three, sailors prefer the larger Lake Norman, waterfront and water communities are everywhere, with Lake Norman being the most developed, and particularly the east and north shores of Lake Norman.
